I am proud of you. There are not a lot of parents who would try to understand the situation.
It’s not a situation you as a mother can easily understand. However, asking him to explain it only makes it worse because he doesn’t even completely know what he’s thinking.
Rather than asking him questions (which he clearly doesn’t want), try to just be there for him. Reassure him. Tell him you’re there for him. Explain to him that you are proud of him for making this difficult decision, and most importantly assure him that you still love him with your whole heart and that you will always be there for him.
The bolded/italicized parts are definitely the most important. If he retaliates and cuts you off, at least he’ll remember that you DO love him, and that he will ALWAYS have a spot in your heart. This makes it much easier for him to reach back out if he does cut you off.
Unfortunately, it is a difficult situation with no easy answer. I’m glad you’re trying your best. No matter how many “downvotes” or rude comments you get on this post, you’re a great mother. Don’t think of him cutting you off as a failure. Everyone needs a mother. He’ll find his way back to you eventually, he just needs time alone to sort things out. And that’s ok.
You don’t really name anything you like about this relationship. Why not just end the whole thing and figure your own stuff out?
