    But we should distinguish unconditioned from conditioned response. Some fear of heights is given to us by evolution, unconditioned. What can be conditioned is the magnitude of fear/adrenaline release response in body and amygdala.

    Phobias are maintained by “negative reinforcement”. That is safety has become associated w avoidance of heights.     Obviously, you can choose to refuse to participate in any graduated exposure to avoid any discomfort. It does involve some emotional discomfort, which subsided progressively. Usually, a person needs sufficient motivation, like the phobia disrupting quality of life.
