I don't see it that way could you enlighten me? Because the way I see it, it's more of “I don't want to stress out if my partner will get hurt and I don't want to be in a relationship where I have to worry if my partner is in a dangerous situation”.

It sounds like you're absolutely on the right track so try not to beat yourself up too much, you'll get there. I would just continue reiterating that you're unbelievably proud of him and that this is an unrelated personal thing you're working on that doesn't reflect on him at all. A new hobby might also be helpful, one that's all your own that you can gain some confidence in. It sounds like you have very high standards for yourself which is great, but it can really chip away at your self confidence over time.

Well, I don't think there's anything you can “do” to change his view, and I don't think this is a “compromise” situation. This is his situation to deal with as he sees fit; it's not about you.
Just give him his space. Sometimes when people are sick, they just want to be left alone and don't want someone hovering over them. Call him from time to time to check in on him, but don't push. In time, he will reach out if he wants company, wants to go out, needs help bathing, needs help cooking, etc. June will be here before you know it.
