I think someone saying something is private to them and you arguing technically they aren't totally private solely to him was the semantic part. If my wife sent me nudes and I said those were private to me and someone said ACKSHUALLY your wife saw them to so its private to the both of you, I would say thats a goofy semantic argument.
He was saying both his journal, and his conversations with his friends that he had in confidence with them were private to him, that didn't mean that nobody except him knew of the contents. Obviously he knows that the people he was TALKING TO also knows what was said, do you actually think he isn't aware of that? He is just saying they aren't open to be read by anyone else.
