I totally get the intentions behind this advice, but that actually sounds like it could be inadvertently very dangerous. I don't think it's safe for someone who is being abused to basically threaten consequences for the abusive partner (even though they would be deserved), and especially in a couples counseling session where too many couples counselors are untrained in the dynamics of abuse and the partner may escalate after the session out of anger.
