I compare it to what it was like when I first had to see the school psychologist, 40 some years ago. People introduce themselves and their partners on Reddit according to their diagnosis nowadays. There are kids and young adults who think it’s cute to pretend to have disorders and diseases on Tik Tok. Mental Health commercials are on TV and the internet. It isn’t nearly as shameful and secretive as it was 40 years ago, 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. WE ALL HAVE SOME TRAUMA, we were all raised by human beings and our children and their children will remember mistakes their parents and guardians made. I can easily recall when PTSD was used to define what the horrors of war did to the human mind, body and soul. Now people suffer trauma because their boyfriend or girlfriend broke up with them after 6 months or they remember a parent flushing their goldfish. My younger brother is dead, a year now, maybe exactly but we will never know because he and his PTSD were alone in his apartment, decomposing so long there couldn’t be an autopsy. I’m not trying to hurt anyone. I can only communicate from my perspective. Earlier today I commented based on what a friend told me, this morning, about the young people she currently works with. They aren’t all abused and neglects children. MANY are under socialized because their parents allowed or encouraged them to stay in the house, staring at screens, some are simply entitled as their parents did everything for them .I’m a retired social worker. I’ve seen the worst of the worst. Trauma and mental illness are not foreign to me. I was beaten and bullied in school but I don’t carry it with me and define everything I do by it. Oh there’s so much I could list from my youth but I don’t spend my time cornering myself in the past. This is who I am. I could say you’re hurting me by invalidating my responses but I won’t because I don’t blame you for my participation in the conversation.
