I went through something similar before. Got passed on a promotion opportunity. Felt like I did everything I could there. Turns out when I first started there, I was getting paid entry level salary. However, my years of continued experience there qualified me into mid-senior level roles and of course the company was still paying me entry level money. Even if I got the promotion, when I tested the market, the competition’s lowest salary would be 15-20k higher than that. I ended up leaving for double the salary I was making.
This could be a blessing in disguise. This company sounds very cheap. Your partner has a lot of experience so he might find that there are better companies and potentially greener pastures ahead. I would continue to push him to apply and find something else. The market is competitive but it’s always easier when you already have a job. He can work like normal and apply/interview for new stuff.
I made some changes, I think youre right. I'm really good about communicating external issues with him like money or work or whatever.
