Thank you, that's what I was worried about. I would be moving to another country with no friends on my own there, his family is lovely though, and I know for sure he'd be very picky about my future job. Jesus I just remembered he'd love for me to work from home and now that's scary.

It sounds like he got scared and ran away from his problems, which implies bad things about his go-to coping strategies and his overall general level of respect and concern for others (he obviously was much more concerned about his feelings.) You don't want to be with a person who buries their head in the sand when the consequences of their actions come to pass.
If he tries to say “it'd be different if it happened with you” I wouldn't trust him.
I'm sorry you're dealing with this situation, but it's better to be made aware of this tendency of his sooner rather than later. It is absolute relationship poison (I know this because I do it, and I'm trying very very hot to stop “coping” in this manner.)
