You don't need to explicitly tell him. Encourage him to go on walks with you, get a membership at his gym and encourage him to go more often with you, basically just invite him along with you when you do active things. If he says he doesn't feel like it, maybe you don't feel like doing something for him anymore that you usually do all of a sudden.
Maybe you 2 could start a fitness challenge where the winner between the 2 of you gets a prize? (This can be tough unless you start at similar places, but can be achieved regardless depending on the stats you are measuring) Basically, you don't have to tell him directly if you can make working out or exercise something you guys do together as a couples activity.
If all else fails, my ex got me to quit smoking by buying super sexy lingerie and telling me I would never see it unless I stopped smoking… While that may sound super sexist and shitty, it did work on my caveman brain so may be worth a shot as a last resort.
