OP The only advice I can give that is not already given is to not change to please her. Do it to improve yourself, to feel better, grow and be a mature person because you want to do it, not because of fear of the competition.
Examine yourself and think about your weak points, the things you want to improve, choose one and begin to work on one at the time until you create habits and results you are satisfied with and then move to the next thing. For example create a routine to help with the chores and each day work at least an hour on it, make a calendar and do it.
