I've noticed that 8 drinks in a night is right around when I start feeling sick, and in my personal experience, pregaming before going out is usually not a long, drawn-out affair and shots aren't something that's done in a well-paced manner. People don't usually take shots because they like the flavor; the drink them because they're a fast and easy way to be more drunk. I guess I can see a world in which someone could have 5 shots before going out and it could be done in a responsible way, but it's definitely not the first thing I'd imagine when someone says that.
