1. This sounds like a good approach. I wouldn't use any “hurtful” language right out the gate even though you feel hurt. Give him a chance to understand where you're coming from. Tell him you're a little thrown off and see what he says. This gives him the opportunity to either a) tell you he's not ready for commitment, or b) cancel the date because he's serious about you.
