because i, and many other people, don't feel loved in a relationship unless the person actively wants to be with me and only me, not happy with me or happy with me and other people. the idea of the person i love with someone else is devastating to me and i want them to feel the same way about the idea of me with someone else in order to be valued. i recognize that open relationships can be no less loving but it's a different kind of love than what i want – loving me the way i want to be loved means valuing our exclusivity as much as i do. i could have full trust that you will respect the exclusivity but if it isn't as important to you as it is to me, i won't feel loved like i need to be anymore.
