I've seen it happy before where my friends in USA gave so much to refugees.
Part of it was their willingness to help and sacrifice for the refugee family, and part of it really was the fact that the TV or shopping spree was something they were able to afford and wanted to help for the family.
But like the case of your Ukraine family , the family receiving the help took things for granted that everybody in America can do this and so why couldn't they get bigger and better things, or even ask for more spending money.
sometimes as much as we want to help some new immigrants, especially ones that we think we have a connection with since they're from the homeland, we still need to be cautious.
Just because they had to leave their country and settled in a new place , doesn't mean they appreciate it or value it or appreciate the people helping them.
But you're not being selfish except for the part that since you did mention that stay with you for a year you might have to still keep to that promise.
